QC Infotech is the authorized partner of QStar products - ASM (Archive Storage Manager) and QNM (Qstar Network Migrator).

QStar Technologies was founded in 1987, in Bethesda, Maryland (USA). From the outset the firm has focused exclusively on developing products and solutions to manage, store and archive enterprise level data. QStar gives companies an intelligent way to protect, manage and use their data according to its importance.

Archive Storage Manager (ASM)

QStar Archive Storage Manager (ASM) manages a range of storage technologies such as Disk Array, Object Storage, Tape Libraries, Optical Disk Libraries, WORM and Cloud (private and hybrid) to form an efficient, safe and cost-effective Active Archive environment by virtualizing differing storage technologies behind a file system. Users see ordinary file shares and can easily search, find and retrieve data directly from the archive.

Expandable data repository is accessed natively by Unix/Linux or Windows and is handled by all existing applications without changing anything, because the pool of storage resources works just like a standard NAS device. Moreover, the user’s data access experience remains exactly the same.

With Archive Storage Manager (ASM) all data stored within Tape Libraries, Object Storage, Cloud Storage (public, private or hybrid) or Optical Libraries is accessed via standard protocols like HTTP or S3 APIs from on–premise IT infrastructures, users and applications, and Cloud Storage resources transparently accessed in native mode through NFS and SMB (users see ordinary file shares).

Key Benefits for the Solution

Network Migrator (QNM)

QStar Network Migrator (QNM) is a policy-based tiered storage and data lifecycle manager. QNM software uses advanced policy management to monitor and automatically migrate, copy or move less frequently used files from primary storage to tiered storage or to a central archive or cloud.

Regardless of the physical location of the files, they can remain fully accessible across the network from their original local file systems. Retrieving the file is as simple as it was before migration. QStar Network Migrator software can be used on its own or in conjunction with other QStar products, such as QStar Archive Storage Manager, to store and manage archived data using Tape Libraries, WORM, Optical, Object Storage or Public, Private and Hybrid Cloud.

The QStar Network Migrator solution allows automatic migration of static files using a combination of their attributes such as:

Date created, Date accessed, File Size, Date modified, File owner, File extension

Date Created

Date accessed

File Size

Date Modified

File Owner

File Extension

STORAGE REPORTER

QStar Storage Reporter lets you perform detailed analysis of data composition in the existing storage infrastructure.

QStar Storage Reporter provides key statistics on existing storage infrastructures without interrupting business operations. Storage Reporter will take just a few hours to perform an assessment of storage rather than the weeks normally required to carry out such a task. Storage Reporter is simple to install and run. Results of the scan are stored in a database, allowing many reports to be generated without the need to rescan each time

QStar Archive Software

Two powerful QStar software products work together to facilitate data migration from the High Performance SAN to a choice of archive technologies, and to actively manage, preserve and protect data in the archive.

Network Migrator is a policy-based data manager that can identify data or assets on the SAN that are infrequently accessed, and can migrate, copy or move the data identified to the archive. The data movement is transparent to the user and does not disrupt workflow or data accessibility.

The standard default operation would be to migrate data. This process leaves a small stub file on the SAN, pointing to the new location of the data. If a stub file is accessed on the SAN, automatically a data retrieval process is started. The file would be moved back to the SAN allowing the asset to be used by one or many clients. If the file has not been modified, it can be remigrated back to the archive, freeing SAN capacity for new data.

Multiple policies can be created using Network Migrator. This allows other operations to be run, perhaps at different times and on different sets of data. An example would be the copying of static, unchanging data to the archive as a pre-migration method. This has a number of benefits; providing additional levels of data protection by storing more content in the archive and moving data overnight at lower SAN utilization times, rather than when capacity is required.

QStar Archive Manager becomes the destination for all files migrated by Network Migrator. Archive Manager software can be installed on a Scale Logic Genesis IAP server and creates an archive gateway, allowing data to be archived to the users choice of technology. Genesis IAP and Archive Manager supports LTO, TS1140 and T10000C tape drives and libraries (with LTFS volume spanning or optimized proprietary formats), optical libraries, RDX, disk-based and object storage archive systems plus cloud storage.

Archive Manager uses a disk cache on the Genesis IAP server to accept data at SAN speeds, then writes data to secure archive media as it becomes available. For simple archive disaster protection, automatic media copies can be created using QStar’s mediacopy feature. Archive Manager tracks all file copies, both online and offline, allowing primary or copy media to be removed from the library. An email notification is sent to the Administrator if a file retrieve request is received for data that is only stored offline. For more advanced disaster protection, replication or mirroring to other on-site or off-site storage is available.

If required, retention management policies can be created to prevent accidental deletion or over-writes of data in the archive. Data is seen as read-only for the period set by the Administrator, this can be indefinite. At the end of the retention period, files are returned to their natural read-write state or automatically purged from the archive.

Partial File Retrieval from the archive is also optionally available. This feature is particularly interesting for the Media and Entertainment market, who wish to retrieve clips from the archive, a small percentage of a much larger movie file. QStar stores the block locations of each file and if provided with the time stamp information can retrieve only the portion of the movie requested, saving significant time and reducing costs.
